A Brief History of St. Joseph

In 1966 the Diocese of Syracuse, New York formed an investigative committee chaired by Mrs. Walter J. Heenan to survey and analyze the need for a Catholic nursing Home in the greater Utica area.

The results of the survey gave evidence of a need that was certain and immediate.

In late 1967 a Board of Trustees was established, giving rise to St. Joseph Nursing Home; and the site and property were quickly chosen and secured.

In 1968 the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm were invited to staff the new facility.  Mother Angeline Teresa, Foundress and Superior General, accepted the invitation.  The groundbreaking took place on April 9, 1970 and the dedication of the Home was held on December 13, 1971.  Today, we are proud to say that we are still served by the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm.
