Alzheimer's Awareness

As a member of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America ( www.alzfdn.org ), St. Joseph Nursing Home is committed to providing awareness of Alzheimer's Disease and dementia and its effects. This public service is accomplished through many means.  They include:

1.   Memory Screenings for those concerned with memory loss issues.  This painless, non-invasive, and confidential screening is completed in 10-15 minutes.  It tests your memory and other intellectual functions and serves as a first step toward finding out if you have Alzheimer's Disease or a related dementia.

  • Memory Screenings are available by appointment only on Monday through Friday from 10 AM - 2 PM.
  • To make an appointment, call Kathy Warren, Staff Development Coordinator, at 315-797-1230.

2.   St. Joseph's Nursing Home is a  participant in the National Memory Screening Day (www.nationalmemoryscreening.org ) in November each year.   We are one of 2,200 organizations nationwide to provide free, confidential memory screenings to an estimated 54,000 individuals. Watch our calendar for full information.

3.   We offer the National Commemorative Candle Lighting Event ( www.candlelighting.org ) each year in November.   Last year, hundreds of organizations across the country joined AFA in light Candles of Care to remember and honor individuals affected by Alzheimer's Disease and related dementia.  Many candles were lit in the Chapel last year to honor those dealing with Alzheimer's and to remember those who have died through its effects.

4.   Educational materials about memory concerns and successful aging are available through Kathy Warren.

5.   Last but not least is our 4th floor which is a Dementia Unit focused on providing quality care for those affected by dementia.  In fact, the Activities Department has a calendar of special activities unique for the residents of this floor.  For more information about this unit, call Julie or Joan in our Social Work Office and for more information about the activities call Sr. Robert at 315-797-1230.
